	MYSTIEKE PLOOIEN IN HET CANVAS: Over de fascinatie voor mystiek in de moderne beeldende kunst

Thema	De beeldende kunst werd pas modern toen ze brak met alle bestaande academische  tradities, inclusief de religieuze sfeer waarin die steevast hadden gebaad. En toch is de moderne beeldende kunst altijd gefascineerd gebleven door religie en al helemaal door haar mystieke tendensen. Uit het werk van Paul Gauguin blijkt maar al te duidelijk hoe de rebelse schilder zich met de verstoten lijdende Christus identificeert; Kandinski’s spraakmakend manifest Über das Geistige in der Kunst een vaak onversneden religieuze toon aan; wanneer Hugo Ball de kunst radicaal dood verklaart en de Dada-revolutie uitroept, beleeft hij dat als een liturgisch religieus moment en wijdt zijn verdere oeuvre aan Byzantijnse en andere mystiek; Mark Rothko’s worsteling met de moderne beeldtaal loopt uit op doeken die enkel nog het onvoorstelbare’ voorstellen en waarvoor in Houston, Texas een niet-confessionele kapel gebouwd wordt. Pier Paolo Pasolini’s films is religie en mystiek alom tegenwoordig als onmisbaar referentiepunt voor een mogelijke anti-bourgeois revolutie. Wat hebben religie en mystiek dat de moderne beeldende kunst zo fascineert, ook in haar meest geavanceerde vormen waarin ze radicaal breekt met de bestaande religieuze en andere tradities? In deze TBI-collegereeks behandelt Marc De Kesel deze problematiek in 6 colleges. Na twee colleges die het algemene kader van reflectie schetsen, zoomt hij in de vier volgende colleges in op specifieke kunstenaars. Deze colleges worden telkens gevolgd door een lezing gegeven door een externe docent. Het schema ziet er als volgt: 1.       Wat is modern aan de moderne beeldende kunst? 2.       Over de verborgen mystieke inspiratie van de moderne kunst, alsook over de verborgen strijd daartegen: Mondriaan & Kandinski versus Duchamp. 3.       Meister Eckhart als moderne poëtica (over Van Ostaijen, Gebruiksaanwijzing der lyriek). Aansluitende TBI-Lecture door Frank Vande Veire 4.       Mystiek van de gewilde chaos: Georges Bataille over de band tussen religie en kunst. Aansluitende TBI-Lecture door  Laurens ten Kate 5.       Monotheïstisch beeldverbod en moderne kunst. Aansluitende TBI-Lecture door Anne-Marie Bos 6.       De mystieke en anti-mystieke achtergrond van de conceptuele kunst uit de jaren zestig en zeventig (over Joseph Beuys en Marcel Broodthaers).
